Interactive Brokers

4.7/54.7DollarScout rating

Interactive Brokers earns 4.7/5 for unusually broad market access, low professional-style pricing, sophisticated routing and order types, strong margin economics, portfolio analytics, and APIs. IBKR says customers can trade stocks, options, futures, currencies, bonds, and funds on more than 170 markets worldwide. Eligible U.S. residents can use IBKR Lite for $0 U.S. exchange-listed stock and ETF commissions, while IBKR Pro offers fixed or tiered pricing and SmartRouting. The tradeoff is complexity: product permissions, market data, exchange fees, multi-currency cash, margin, tax lots, and platform choice require active management. It is our strongest fit for experienced global, multi-asset, or API-driven traders and a weaker fit for someone who wants a guided U.S.-only app.

How to evaluate Interactive Brokers

A source-backed overview of the product, its workflow, tradeoffs, and the checks to make before paying or signing up.

What Interactive Brokers is

Interactive Brokers is a global multi-asset broker offering stocks, ETFs, options, futures, currencies, bonds, funds, metals, event contracts, and other products through regulated entities. Its current platform page describes access to more than 170 markets worldwide.

The platform family includes IBKR Desktop, Trader Workstation, Client Portal, IBKR Mobile, GlobalTrader, specialist apps, and several APIs. It serves simple investing and institutional-style workflows, though configuration becomes demanding quickly.

Lite and Pro pricing

IBKR Lite provides eligible U.S. retail accounts commission-free U.S. exchange-listed stock and ETF orders. Non-qualifying securities and other products follow separate pricing.

IBKR Pro offers U.S. stock fixed pricing at $0.005 per share with a $1 minimum or tiered base rates from $0.0005 to $0.0035 with a $0.35 minimum under the current overview. Tiered plans pass through relevant venue costs and rebates. Pro also uses SmartRouting and different margin and idle-cash formulas.

Both plans list $0 account minimum and $0 maintenance fee for direct accounts. Data, product, venue, currency, transfer, and specialist service charges remain possible.

Options and futures

U.S. Pro option commissions range from $0.15 to $0.65 per contract by premium and volume, generally with a $1 order minimum. Lite charges $0.65 for the first 1,000 contracts monthly. Regulatory, clearing, exchange, transaction, or surcharge fees can apply.

Futures, bonds, funds, spot currencies, and international shares use their own schedules. Record the venue, currency, contract multiplier, minimum, and pass-through costs before trading.

Platforms and APIs

IBKR Desktop combines common TWS tools with a newer interface. TWS is the flagship for multi-product traders needing advanced order types, risk tools, scanners, and layouts. Client Portal handles browser access and administration; Mobile and GlobalTrader support different levels of global trading.

APIs range from Excel and TWS to Client Portal and FIX. Production systems need duplicate protection, reconciliation, stale-data checks, pacing controls, alerts, logs, position limits, and a kill switch. Paper trading cannot reproduce every live fill or margin event.

Global workflow

Global access adds exchange calendars, settlement cycles, market-data licenses, short-sale rules, taxes, corporate actions, and currencies. A familiar ticker can represent a different listing or settlement currency.

Before each new market, document product, venue, currency, trading hours, settlement, tax withholding, commission minimum, data status, and legal entity. Maintain cash buffers rather than relying on automatic currency or margin behavior.

Margin and idle cash

IBKR quotes financing as a benchmark plus a plan- and balance-dependent spread. The current comparison states that Pro begins at benchmark plus 1.5% and Lite uses benchmark plus 2.5%. Rates are blended, accrue daily, and change with benchmarks.

Positive idle-cash interest depends on plan, currency, qualifying cash, and account NAV. Accounts below $100,000 NAV receive a proportional rate under current rules. Do not treat a headline rate as applying to every dollar.

House margin can increase and IBKR can liquidate without waiting for a traditional call. Stress correlated positions and currencies and keep equity well above the displayed requirement.

Data, routing, and execution

Some non-consolidated U.S. equity data is complimentary; other markets and depth require bundles or a la carte subscriptions. Check whether a quote is delayed, snapshot, top-of-book, or full depth.

SmartRouting, direct routes, algorithms, and complex orders provide substantial control. Measure execution by effective spread, price improvement, fill probability, and market impact, not acknowledgement speed alone.

Support and records

IBKR provides tickets, chat, phone, status resources, documentation, and IBKR Campus. Its breadth makes precise problem reports essential. Record account, platform, timestamp, order ID, exchange, currency, and error.

Save statements, executions, tax lots, conversions, corporate actions, permissions, data subscriptions, and support messages. Enable strong authentication, withdrawal controls, alerts, and a trusted contact.

A practical account audit

IBKR customers should reconcile by legal entity, account segment, currency, and product. Compare commissions, exchange fees, market-data subscriptions, currency conversions, margin interest, short-stock borrow, corporate actions, and tax withholding with the current schedule. A single consolidated balance can hide meaningful exposures in another currency or account segment.

API users should also archive strategy version, client order ID, submitted parameters, acknowledgements, fills, cancellations, and connection events. Define maximum order size, position, daily loss, message rate, and stale-data behavior outside the strategy logic. Test what happens when a session reconnects while live orders already exist.

For global assets, verify holiday calendars, settlement, conversion, and local tax documentation before the first order. IBKR’s breadth is valuable precisely because it exposes customers to rules that a domestic single-market workflow never encounters.

Where IBKR appears on DollarScout

DollarScout’s full review scores costs, platform, execution, tools, and service. Comparisons distinguish Lite from Pro and model data, venue, currency, margin, and product fees.

The 4.7/5 rating reflects exceptional capability for a self-directed customer. It does not predict a fill, return, margin outcome, or service response.

Decision checklist

Before funding:

  1. Choose Lite or Pro from the complete feature table.
  2. Identify exact markets, permissions, and currencies.
  3. Price commissions, data, conversion, and financing.
  4. Select the least complex platform that meets the need.
  5. Build margin and API safety controls.
  6. Verify tax and settlement rules for foreign assets.
  7. Keep emergency contacts and records outside the platform.

Editorial conclusion

Interactive Brokers is one of the most capable retail-accessible brokers in the market. It is best for customers who can turn that breadth into a controlled workflow rather than accumulating products, leverage, and settings they do not understand.
