Best Auto Insurance Companies of 2026

State Farm is DollarScout’s best overall auto insurance company for 2026. Its combination of local-agent guidance, broad coverage, mature digital claims, repair coordination, and a telematics program that does not add a Drive Safe & Save behavior surcharge makes it the most balanced choice in this six-company field. Progressive ranks second for powerful quote tools, specialty-vehicle breadth, and transparent Snapshot tradeoffs; Farmers ranks third for agent-supported coverage, discounts, and repair coordination; GEICO ranks fourth for direct digital servicing; Allstate ranks fifth for agent support, Drivewise, and Milewise; Lemonade ranks sixth because its app is polished but Lemonade Car remains available in only a limited group of states.

There is no universally cheapest auto insurer. A carrier prices the actual drivers, vehicles, location, use, history, selected limits, deductibles, discounts, and factors permitted by state law. DollarScout therefore did not rank companies from an online “average rate” or a single sample driver. We reviewed official coverage pages, telematics rules, claims and repair workflows, purchase channels, state limitations, carrier disclosures, and NAIC consumer guidance on July 19, 2026. We did not request profile-specific quotes, purchase policies, enroll in telematics, file claims, use repair shops, or time customer support.

The evidence behind the ranking

Prices, methodology, tradeoffs, and the workflow each service actually supports.

How we ranked auto insurance companies

The rubric weights Coverage and Contract Fit at 25%, Price and Quote Quality at 25%, Claims and Repair Infrastructure at 20%, Telematics and Discounts at 15%, and Service and Availability at 15%. Price and quote quality measures whether a shopper can obtain and compare an intelligible quote; it is not a claim that the first-place company will quote the lowest premium.

We penalized unsupported “cheap” labels, state limitations, purchase-channel ambiguity, and telematics pages that foreground savings while making downside rules difficult to find. We gave credit for multiple reporting channels, the freedom to choose a repair facility, useful coverage options, clear data disclosures, and a coherent insurer relationship. Advertising awards, switcher surveys, and savings averages were not treated as independent evidence of price or claims quality.

Auto insurance shopping route that moves from liability limits and vehicle coverage through matched quotes, telematics terms, insurer identity, and claims repair options
The reliable route is coverage first, matched quotes second, and telematics last. A low premium is not comparable if liability limits, deductibles, rental coverage, or the issuing company differ.

1. State Farm — best overall auto insurance company

State Farm ranks first because it combines a large local-agent model with useful online and app service rather than forcing a buyer to choose one channel. Its auto catalog includes liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured and underinsured motorist, medical payments, rideshare, emergency road service, and rental and travel expense options, subject to state forms. A household can also coordinate home, renters, life, and other policies through the same agent relationship.

The strongest differentiator is balance. Claims can be reported online, in the app, or by phone. The account and app can show status, accept documents and photos, support direct deposit, and connect the customer with the claims team. For eligible repairs, Select Service offers coordinated estimates and participating shops, while State Farm says customers remain free to use another repairer. Network convenience does not replace review of parts, calibration, supplements, rental limits, the deductible, or the actual repair warranty.

Drive Safe & Save deserves a more precise description than “save up to 30%.” State Farm currently describes a 10% initial participation discount and potential savings up to 30%, with state-specific variation. The program is unavailable in California, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, and eligibility can differ in North Carolina. The app and Bluetooth beacon can evaluate mileage and driving characteristics such as braking, acceleration, cornering, speed, and distraction.

State Farm says driving behavior in Drive Safe & Save does not create a program surcharge. That does not freeze the total policy price: base rates, vehicles, drivers, claims, location, coverage, corrected mileage, and discounts can still change at renewal. A driver whose prior premium reflected low annual mileage can also see the price change when recorded mileage is higher. Read the state terms and keep app permissions working before assigning value to the discount.

State Farm is not first because it is proven cheapest. It publishes no universal price, and new-policy appetite can vary by state and ZIP code. It ranks first for a complete operating model: broad coverage, an assigned agent, digital claims, a voluntary repair network, and a comparatively understandable telematics downside.

2. Progressive — best for quote tools and vehicle breadth

Progressive ranks second for shoppers who want to model coverage and price in detail. It sells through direct online and phone channels and through independent agents. The company states that price can vary by purchase channel, so an agent quote and a direct quote should be compared with the same effective date, drivers, vehicles, limits, deductibles, endorsements, payment schedule, and discounts.

Name Your Price is a useful interface, not a price-matching promise. Progressive first calculates a range available for the applicant, then shows coverage combinations close to a selected budget. Its own page warns that the lowest price may not include all desired protection. Set liability, uninsured-motorist, physical-damage, rental, roadside, rideshare, and loan or lease needs before moving the price control. Reducing protection until a number fits is not savings in the economic sense; it is risk transfer back to the household.

Progressive also has unusual transportation depth. Beyond personal auto, it offers products for motorcycles, boats, personal watercraft, RVs, travel trailers, classic cars, ATVs, snowmobiles, golf carts, and commercial vehicles. That breadth can simplify a complex garage, although each product and company still needs its own policy review.

Snapshot is more candidly documented than many usage-based programs. It can use time of day, hard braking, rapid acceleration, mileage, and—for app users in some states—phone activity. Progressive says the personalized result can increase the renewal for higher-risk driving; its current page says roughly two in ten participating drivers receive an increase. Snapshot is unavailable in California, participation-discount and surcharge treatment vary by state, and opting out after the applicable period can remove a discount or still allow collected data to influence renewal.

That downside keeps Progressive below State Farm for a general audience, but it is not inherently a flaw. Transparent risk-based pricing can fit a low-mileage, smooth daytime driver who accepts the data collection. Progressive ranks highly because a consumer can see the decision mechanics and because its coverage and claims tools are extensive—not because Snapshot or Name Your Price guarantees a bargain.

3. Farmers — best agent-supported alternative

Farmers ranks third because it combines local-agent guidance with online quoting, app and web service, digital claims, a large discount menu, and broad personal-lines coordination. Its auto catalog covers the expected liability and physical-damage building blocks plus state-specific rental, roadside, rideshare, accident-forgiveness, and specialty-vehicle options. The issuing Farmers company and actual form vary, so the legal insurer on the quote must be recorded.

Farmers advertises more than 20 auto discount options, including multi-policy, multiple vehicle, safe driver, accident-free, good student, payment, paperless, protective-device, and affinity opportunities where eligible. Its switcher-savings figure comes from surveyed new customers who switched and reported savings; DollarScout did not treat that selected result as evidence that an unknown driver will save.

Signal can provide an initial enrollment discount and a renewal discount for safer driving. The downside is explicit: Farmers says riskier recorded driving could increase renewal premium. Signal is unavailable in Florida, Hawaii, New York, and South Carolina, and the Signal discount is unavailable in California under the current disclosure. A driver should review phone use, braking, trip assignment, participation, privacy, opt-out, and renewal rules before enrolling.

Claims can be filed and tracked online, and Farmers offers both network and outside-shop repair paths. Farmers says eligible network repairs are guaranteed while the customer owns the vehicle. That operating model earns third place. It remains below Progressive because price and product vary by state and company and because Signal has renewal downside; it sits above the direct carriers for shoppers who will use the agent relationship and multi-policy coordination.

4. GEICO — best direct digital auto experience

GEICO ranks fourth for drivers who prefer a fast, self-directed workflow. Its core auto companies offer standard liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured or underinsured motorist, state-required medical or no-fault coverage, plus optional rental, emergency road service, mechanical breakdown, rideshare, and other state-specific protection. Quoting, ID cards, billing, policy changes, roadside access, and claim reporting are built around the website and mobile app.

Claims can be reported online or through the app, and GEICO Claims Express provides secure access for eligible auto, motorcycle, or RV claims. Digital availability is operationally useful, but DollarScout did not file a claim and does not infer settlement quality or response time from interface features.

DriveEasy uses the mobile app to collect driving-related information and provide a score and feedback. GEICO’s current documentation says the program is offered in 47 states plus Washington, D.C., and is unavailable in California, Hawaii, and Vermont. Recorded driving can affect premium, and all enrolled drivers must meet the applicable participation requirements. A household should confirm trip classification, phone permissions, behavior factors, opt-out treatment, and whether every driver is willing to participate.

GEICO’s largest ranking strength is also its limitation: the model is direct-first. A digitally confident customer can move quickly and still use phone support, but there is less consistent assigned-agent guidance than at State Farm or Allstate. It is also important not to transfer GEICO’s auto assessment to a homeowners or renters policy. GEICO Insurance Agency places many property products with affiliated or non-affiliated carriers; the company shown on the property quote has the contractual and financial responsibility.

GEICO belongs on a matched quote sheet for most drivers. It does not receive a “best low rates” label because no public company page can establish that result for an unknown applicant.

5. Allstate — best for agent support and low-mileage options

Allstate ranks fifth with a broad auto catalog, local agents, online and phone purchasing, a mature claims platform, Drivewise, and the separate Milewise product. Its auto page states that price can vary based on whether the customer purchases online, through a call center, or through an agent. Where practical, compare those routes using identical inputs.

Coverage options can include expected liability and physical-damage protection plus rental, roadside, rideshare, sound-system or custom-equipment treatment, new-car replacement, accident forgiveness, and deductible programs where available. Each label has conditions. New-car replacement can have age, mileage, ownership, and total-loss requirements; accident forgiveness can prevent an eligible surcharge without preventing every renewal increase.

Drivewise should not be represented as discount-only. Allstate says high-risk driving can increase the rate in some states. Its support materials also describe setup, trip-count, participation, and safe-driving requirements that can reduce savings or lead to a surcharge when applicable. Before enrollment, determine who must activate the app, the number and timing of trips, how misclassified trips are corrected, which behaviors matter, and how an opt-out affects price.

Milewise is a distinct usage-based policy for eligible states and vehicles. A pay-per-mile vehicle generally combines a daily rate and per-mile rate, while an unlimited option uses a daily rate. It can be valuable for a rarely driven car, but the break-even point depends on both components and real mileage. Model a low, normal, and high-mileage year and compare each with a conventional policy. One long road trip can materially alter a month.

Allstate’s agent and claims infrastructure make it a credible full-service alternative. It ranks below the top three because channel pricing and telematics participation add complexity. The actual quote can still make it the best choice for a particular household.

6. Lemonade — best app-first option where available

Lemonade ranks sixth because its digital model is genuinely clear while its auto geography is much narrower. The current availability materials list Lemonade Car in Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington. A nationally framed “best car insurance” ranking must penalize a product that most U.S. drivers cannot buy.

Car quoting, policy management, and claim intake are designed for the app. Lemonade uses location and driving-related technology for the auto product, and its terms contain specific permissions and program conditions. A shopper should identify mileage treatment, trip collection, driver attribution, phone access, opt-out consequences, and renewal use before enabling it. Availability in a state does not guarantee eligibility for every driver, ZIP code, or vehicle.

The broader Lemonade experience can be attractive to a household already using renters, homeowners, pet, or term life products. Bundling may create a discount where the necessary products are offered. The product map, underwriting entity, and contract remain separate for each line. Lemonade’s lack of phone signup and narrower human-advisor model are meaningful disadvantages for drivers who want coverage guidance before purchase.

Lemonade is not a weak insurer merely because it ranks sixth. It is a specialized fit: app-first customers in an eligible state with a relatively straightforward risk. It should be compared on coverage and final premium, not chosen because “AI insurance” sounds automatically faster or cheaper.

Auto insurance company comparison

Company Best fit Quote and service model Telematics reality Main limitation

Lemonade App-first drivers in an eligible state App and web centered; no traditional local-agent model Location and driving permissions require contract review Car currently offered in only 10 states

Build comparable auto insurance quotes

Start with the risk, not a company website’s defaults. Choose bodily-injury and property-damage liability limits based on assets, income, household drivers, and plausible loss severity. State minimums are legal floors, not a financial plan. Ask whether an umbrella policy requires higher underlying limits.

Then match uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, personal injury protection or medical payments, and any state-specific no-fault choices. These lines can differ in stacking, rejection, deductibles, coordination with health insurance, and household-member protection. Do not reject them merely to copy a low sample premium.

For the vehicle, match comprehensive and collision deductibles, rental reimbursement daily and total limits, roadside assistance, glass treatment, OEM or aftermarket parts provisions, custom equipment, gap or loan/lease payoff, and new-car replacement. A financed or leased vehicle can require physical-damage coverage, but a lender’s requirement does not establish the right liability limit.

Use the same drivers, garaging address, annual mileage, commute, business use, delivery or rideshare status, effective date, payment plan, paperless settings, and prior-insurance details. Save each complete quote or proposal. A six-month installment should not be compared with a 12-month total, and an autopay discount should not be counted if the household will not maintain it.

Decide whether telematics fits the household

Usage-based insurance is not one product. Some programs use a temporary observation period; others monitor continuously. Some only reduce a program discount; others can increase the renewal. Data can include mileage, time, speed, acceleration, braking, cornering, location, phone interaction, and trip classification.

Ask five questions before enrolling: what data is collected, who must participate, how the score affects price, what happens when permissions fail, and how to opt out. Also consider whether the driver’s environment rather than skill creates unfavorable signals. Night work, dense urban traffic, frequent passenger trips, shared vehicles, and necessary hard braking can complicate the result.

An initial participation discount is temporary value until the renewal mechanics are known. Compare the quote both with and without telematics. Take screenshots of the enrollment disclosure and renewal result, correct misclassified trips promptly, and review privacy terms rather than relying on a short marketing page.

The brand is not always the legal company. Large groups use multiple state and product entities, and agencies can place coverage with outside carriers. Record the full company name and NAIC number on each quote. Use that entity—not only the consumer brand—when checking state licensing, complaint information, and current financial-strength ratings.

Claims infrastructure matters, but a mobile upload feature is not proof of fair valuation. Review reporting channels, after-hours access, rental coordination, direct deposit, repair choices, catastrophe communication, and how supplements are handled. State law generally preserves repair-shop choice even when a network offers convenience. Ask who guarantees network workmanship and for how long.

After a loss, protect people first, notify emergency services when appropriate, exchange information, photograph the scene and damage, preserve video, identify witnesses, and report promptly under the policy. Do not admit legal liability at the scene or sign a broad release without understanding it. Keep the declarations, policy, endorsements, estimates, receipts, medical records, rental documents, and every material communication.

No company is cheapest for every driver. Prices depend on the specific household, vehicles, location, coverage, deductibles, discounts, underwriting, channel, and state rules. Request several quotes with identical inputs and compare the full policy term.

What is “full coverage” auto insurance?

It is an informal phrase, not a standardized contract. People often mean liability plus comprehensive and collision, but limits, deductibles, medical coverage, uninsured-motorist protection, rental, roadside, rideshare, and endorsements can still differ materially.

Can a safe-driving app raise my premium?

It depends on the program and state. Progressive says Snapshot can increase renewal for higher-risk driving, GEICO says DriveEasy data can affect premium, and Allstate says Drivewise can increase price in some states. State Farm says Drive Safe & Save behavior does not add a program surcharge, although the total policy price can still change.

Should I buy only the state minimum liability limit?

Usually not without deliberate analysis. Minimum limits can be exhausted by a serious injury or multi-vehicle loss, leaving the at-fault driver personally responsible for the remainder. Choose limits based on assets, income, household risks, and umbrella requirements.

Do I have to use the insurer’s repair shop?

The reviewed insurers describe network options, but customers generally retain repair-shop choice. Network shops can simplify estimates, payment, updates, and workmanship guarantees. Read the policy, state rules, parts treatment, calibration process, supplement procedure, and written guarantee.

How should I check an insurer’s complaint record?

Use the legal company name and NAIC number on the quote or declarations in NAIC Consumer Insurance Search or the state insurance department’s tools. Filter by state, year, and personal-auto line, and compare several years with similar companies rather than using a brand-wide anecdote.
