H&R Block ranks first among the five products in DollarScout's 2026 general tax-software comparison because it combines a strong interview, transparent tier pricing, live tax-professional help on paid DIY editions, and separate virtual or office preparation when a return should leave DIY. FreeTaxUSA ranks second as the best value, with $0 supported federal filing and $15.99 states across complex forms. TurboTax ranks third for the most polished guidance and broadest online expert ecosystem, offset by premium pricing. TaxAct is fourth for a direct workflow and strong written accuracy guarantee. Cash App Taxes is fifth overall but can be first for a supported, confidently self-prepared return that needs $0 federal and state filing.
There is no universal winner. A W-2 household, active investor, multi-state worker, rental owner, sole proprietor, and taxpayer responding to a notice buy different work. DollarScout reviewed current product, form, pricing, service-level, guarantee, audit, security, and IRS pages on July 19, 2026. Prices refer to 2025 individual returns filed in 2026 and can change by promotion, form, service, state, or checkout. We did not file a return, test every import or form, speak with an expert, visit an office, compare calculation outputs, or make a guarantee claim.

How we ranked tax software
The model weights Return and Form Fit at 25%, Guidance and Review Controls at 20%, All-In Price at 20%, Expert and Handoff Options at 15%, Import and Data Workflow at 10%, and Security, Guarantees, and Data Exit at 10%. A provider does not score well merely for a low starting price, a large refund counter, or an office network. The ranking asks what happens when the actual documents, states, advice needs, and notice risk enter the return.
The useful comparison is the completed return: supported forms, all jurisdictions, who owns the work, review controls, and the final checkout.
1. H&R Block — best overall hybrid workflow
H&R Block ranks first because it gives a filer credible choices without requiring an immediate handoff. The 2026 Online lineup is Free for qualifying returns, $65 Deluxe, $105 Premium, and $130 Self-Employed, with $49 per paid state. Paid DIY editions currently include AI Tax Assist and unlimited Live Tax Pro Support. Separate Tax Pro Review, virtual preparation, drop-off, and office services change who reviews, prepares, and signs the return.
The strength is controlled escalation. A homeowner can use Deluxe, an investor or rental owner can use Premium, and a sole proprietor can use Self-Employed while asking live questions. If documents or judgment outgrow self-preparation, a professional service is available under the same brand. H&R Block's office footprint helps taxpayers who prefer face-to-face document review or need a prepared return.
Those paths are not one interchangeable account. An office professional cannot automatically open an ordinary Online DIY return, and switching can mean a new engagement, document transfer, price, and preparer responsibility. Tax Pro Review is an add-on to DIY; Live Tax Pro Support answers questions while the customer prepares; office or virtual preparation has a paid preparer sign. Confirm the path before duplicating work.
Pricing is clearer than a forms-based Full Service quote but still needs a complete basket. Premium plus one state totals $154; Self-Employed plus one state totals $179. A mover, remote worker, or rental owner can need multiple states. Optional audit support or prepared services add cost. Free Online is genuinely $0 federal and state for eligible simple returns, but investments, itemization, HSAs, rentals, and business income can require payment.
The interview, document upload, prior-return import, Accuracy Review, and current live help create a strong general workflow. As with every provider, imported wages, withholding, basis, state allocations, and corrected documents must be reconciled. H&R Block wins for a filer who wants useful software today and a realistic human handoff tomorrow.
2. FreeTaxUSA — best overall value
FreeTaxUSA ranks second because its price is both low and unusually independent of federal complexity. Every supported federal return is $0, including itemization, investments, stock and cryptocurrency sales, rental property, Schedule C, Schedule SE, K-1 income, depreciation, home office, and qualified business income. Each current-year state return is $15.99.
For a one-state investor or sole proprietor, $15.99 is dramatically below the paid baskets from H&R Block, TurboTax, or TaxAct. It also reduces late-interview upgrade risk: the federal product does not move from basic to premium because a 1099-B or Schedule C appears. State and optional services remain visible and fixed.
The service supports W-2 and multiple 1099 imports, including consolidated investment documents and stock or cryptocurrency data. Returning-user and competitor-return imports help with continuity. The filer must still inspect basis, wash sales, holding periods, retirement codes, state withholding, carryovers, depreciation, and the signed prior return. A parsed PDF is not an authoritative tax determination.
Support separates cleanly. Basic is free. Deluxe costs $7.99 for live chat and unlimited amendments. Pro Support costs $64.99 for personalized tax advice by call, chat, or screen share while the customer self-prepares. Audit Defense costs $19.99. A federal return, one state, and Pro Support total $80.98; the professional advises but does not prepare or sign.
FreeTaxUSA ranks below H&R Block because a first-time complex filer receives less explanation, there is no full-service preparation path in the compared product, and professional help is scheduled advice rather than ownership. It can rank first for a confident DIY filer who knows the documents and wants transparent value.
3. TurboTax — best guided experience and online expert depth
TurboTax ranks third because it remains the most polished translation of tax forms into questions. Document capture, financial-institution imports, prior-year continuity, contextual explanations, Intuit Assist, and CompleteCheck reduce the mechanical burden. The same online workflow offers Do It Yourself, Expert Assist, and Expert Full Service.
Current DIY pricing runs from $0 to $139, with state additional on paid products. Expert Assist ranges from $79 to $209 plus state and provides on-demand advice and a final review while the customer prepares. Full Service starts with a promotion for a base W-2 and Form 1040, then uses the actual forms and states to determine a personalized price. The expert prepares, signs, and files after customer approval.
That service ladder is useful when chosen intentionally. An investor can use financial imports and Premium; a freelancer can capture a 1099-NEC, work through Schedule C, or escalate to an expert. TurboTax says experts average 12 years of experience, though availability, subject matter, and the specific professional vary.
Price is the reason it is not first. Free Edition has narrow eligibility. Investment sales, self-employment, rental income, itemization, or other schedules can force a paid tier after data entry. State filing, refund-payment processing, Audit Defense, and expert service can raise the total. Full Service's displayed starting offer is not a flat quote.
CompleteCheck and the calculation guarantee are useful controls, not substitutes for input reconciliation. Compare every imported W-2 and 1099, inspect missing cost basis, and read the final forms. The Maximum Refund Guarantee generally refunds the applicable product price rather than the full difference; Audit Support is informational, while representation is a different paid service.
Choose TurboTax when better explanations, imports, and a deep online expert path justify the premium. A confident filer with supported forms can obtain similar tax output for far less elsewhere.
4. TaxAct — best direct conventional interview
TaxAct ranks fourth with a straightforward tier ladder: qualifying Free federal filing, $59.99 Deluxe, $99.99 Premier, and $109.99 Self-Employed. Paid state returns cost $64.99 each. The interview, Deduction Maximizer, TaxAct Alerts, W-2 and prior-return imports, mobile workflow, Xpert Assist, Full Service, and optional Audit Defense cover the main consumer paths.
The federal Self-Employed price is competitive, but state cost changes the comparison. One Self-Employed federal and state return totals $174.98 before expert or audit services; two paid states total $239.97. Users should identify resident, part-year, nonresident, city, and local filings before treating the $109.99 headline as the price.
Xpert Assist currently costs $60 and adds unlimited live advice plus a broad final review for eligible consumer products. “Unlimited” refers to contacts, not every topic, time, or document. The filer remains responsible for data entry and signs the DIY return. Xpert Full Service starts separately and changes preparation responsibility and forms-based pricing.
TaxAct's written $100,000 Accuracy Guarantee is a differentiator. For an eligible self-prepared 1040 product, the summary can cover software fees, a tax difference determined by an authority, penalties, interest, and documented legal or audit costs caused by a qualifying software error, up to the cap. User omissions, wrong inputs, eligibility conditions, notice handling, and claim deadlines still matter.
TaxAct fits an experienced filer who prefers a direct interface and has compared the complete state basket. It ranks below FreeTaxUSA on value and below H&R Block and TurboTax on guidance and human-service cohesion.
5. Cash App Taxes — best no-fee supported return
Cash App Taxes ranks fifth overall because it is narrower as a service, not because the software fee is weak. Supported federal and state individual self-preparation costs $0, including many 1099, investment, cryptocurrency, rental, and self-employed situations. There is no paid federal tier and no ordinary state charge.
For a confident filer whose exact forms and jurisdictions are supported, that can make Cash App Taxes the rational first choice. Phone and desktop access, e-file authorization, encryption disclosures, authenticator-app two-factor authentication, and download access support a legitimate filing workflow.
The tradeoff is responsibility. The written terms state that Cash App Taxes is not an accountant or tax, legal, or financial adviser. It does not promise tax planning, audit help, or representation. The user is solely responsible for complete information and timely federal and state returns. A Cash App account is also required.
Its Maximum Refund Guarantee applies only to eligible federal returns amended through another online service in the same calendar year and pays a gift card of $25 to $100. It excludes state and prior-year returns. This is much narrower than a professional review or broad error remedy.
Cash App Taxes is excellent when the filer understands the return and $0 state filing matters. It ranks fifth for the general audience because an unsupported form, uncertain position, or desire for expert ownership requires a different workflow rather than a paid upgrade inside the product.

Calculate the all-in price before choosing
Create a row for the federal product, every state, local return, expert advice, professional review, full preparation, audit defense, amendment, prior-year return, refund-payment processing, and sales tax. Use ordinary price for recurring planning and record a promotion separately. A one-state quote cannot be compared with a two-state return.
Also record who prepares and signs. DIY plus live advice, DIY plus final review, and full-service preparation transfer different amounts of work and responsibility. Ask whether the professional reviews source documents, covers every jurisdiction, signs the return, handles amendments, answers post-filing questions, and represents the taxpayer after a notice.
Match the form set before entering data
Build a document and form inventory: W-2, 1099-INT, DIV, B, NEC, MISC, K and R; 1098; 1095-A; K-1; Schedule A, C, D, E, F, and SE; HSA, marketplace insurance, foreign reporting, depreciation, and state forms. Include corrected documents, carryovers, estimated payments, and the signed prior return.
Check the provider's current supported-form page and tier mapping. A product can support a form only in a higher edition or exclude e-file for a state combination. Discover that before uploading identity and financial records.
Treat imports as unverified input
Imports can save hours and still create a wrong return. Reconcile payer and employer IDs, wages, withholding, state boxes, retirement codes, interest, dividends, proceeds, basis, wash sales, holding periods, digital-asset transfers, and corrected statements. Compare prior-year imports with the signed return for dependents, capital-loss carryovers, depreciation, passive losses, and estimated payments.
After the interview, inspect the actual federal and state forms. Explain material changes in adjusted gross income, taxable income, total tax, credits, payments, refund or balance due, and carryforwards. Resolve warnings and download returns, worksheets, e-file acknowledgements, and payment confirmations to encrypted storage.
Know what the guarantees do not do
Maximum-refund, calculation, accuracy, audit-support, and satisfaction guarantees are different. Read the remedy, comparison method, eligible product, time limit, evidence, exclusions, and whether the provider pays software fees, penalties and interest, a tax difference, representation, or only information.
No guarantee validates omitted income, an unsupported deduction, incomplete basis, or a user override. If an IRS or state notice arrives, verify it through an official account or published number, preserve the envelope and response date, and identify the purchased support before disclosing documents.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best tax software overall in 2026?
H&R Block ranks first for a balanced workflow combining capable software, current live tax-pro help on paid DIY editions, and separate prepared-return options. FreeTaxUSA is better for a confident filer prioritizing price; TurboTax is better when premium guidance and online experts matter most.
Which tax software is cheapest for a complex return?
FreeTaxUSA charges $0 for supported federal complexity and $15.99 per state. Cash App Taxes can cost $0 federal and state when the entire return is supported and no tax advice is required. Compare forms, states, and support rather than the federal headline alone.
Is live tax help the same as full service?
No. Live help or Assist usually advises while the taxpayer enters and signs. A final review checks a DIY return under defined scope. Full Service or office preparation assigns a paid preparer who reviews documents, prepares, signs, and files after approval.
Can software guarantee an accurate return?
Software can guarantee its calculations or defined errors under written conditions. It cannot guarantee information the taxpayer omitted, misclassified, or entered incorrectly. Reconciliation and evidence remain necessary.
Should I pay fees from my refund?
Usually compare the separate processing fee with paying by card or bank. A refund-transfer product can be much more expensive than direct payment. It generally does not make the IRS issue a refund faster and can introduce another bank or disbursement step.
