Best Personal Loans of 2026

LightStream ranks first among the four personal-loan providers in DollarScout's 2026 comparison for a qualified borrower because it combines no origination, application, or prepayment fee with $5,000 to $100,000 amounts, purpose-specific fixed terms, a published 25.39% maximum APR, and possible same-day funding. SoFi ranks second for broader discounts, a no-fee offer path, optional fee-rate choices, Direct Pay, and unemployment support. Happen Bank—formerly LendingClub—is third for $1,000 loans, joint applications, Direct Pay, and up to 84 months. Upstart is fourth as an important broader-underwriting quote whose potentially large origination fee and shorter term menu require close comparison.

This ranking evaluates only the four providers attached to DollarScout's current page. Credit unions, community banks, employer programs, secured loans, credit cards, medical payment plans, and other online lenders can be cheaper or more appropriate. Exclusion is not a negative recommendation. DollarScout reviewed official provider rates, terms, fees, eligibility, funding, permitted uses, payment, hardship, and disclosure documents on July 19, 2026. We did not prequalify, apply, submit income documents, receive offers, fund loans, make payments, or contact support.

Happen Bank (formerly LendingClub)
Best low minimum and joint application

Happen Bank, formerly LendingClub, supports loans from $1,000, joint applications, Direct Pay, and 24-to-84-month terms. That makes it more flexible for smaller needs or two qualified borrowers. Most loans can deduct a 0% to 8% origination fee, APR reaches 35.99%, and late charges can apply after the grace period. The actual offer—not legacy LendingClub reputation—controls the decision.

Best alternative-underwriting comparison quote

Upstart is a valuable fourth quote for applicants whose credit history does not fit a conventional lender. Its partner model considers credit, income, and other information, with $1,000 to $75,000 advertised subject to state minimums. Fixed APR can reach 35.99%, terms are usually only three or five years, and the representative 7.25% origination fee leaves $9,275 from a $10,000 issued loan.

The evidence behind the ranking

Prices, methodology, tradeoffs, and the workflow each service actually supports.

How we ranked personal loans

The model weights All-In Cost and Net Proceeds at 30%, Amount and Term Fit at 20%, Eligibility and Offer Transparency at 15%, Funding and Payment Operations at 15%, Support and Hardship Options at 10%, and Permitted Uses and Consumer Safeguards at 10%. Rankings use published programs; the borrower's actual signed offer outranks our order.

APR is the principal comparison rate because it includes interest and certain lender fees. It is not the entire decision: compare the cash actually received, payment, number of payments, total of payments, late policy, optional discounts, and consequences of losing AutoPay. A fast approval or low monthly payment earns no credit if it increases unnecessary borrowing.

Personal loan offer worksheet comparing requested cash, issued principal, origination fee, net proceeds, APR, monthly payment, term, total payments, funding date, and hardship support
Normalize every offer. The amount issued can differ from cash received, and a low payment can conceal a fee or a longer, more expensive term.

1. LightStream — best no-fee personal loan for strong credit

LightStream ranks first because its pricing is structurally simple for the borrowers it targets. It advertises fixed-rate loans from $5,000 to $100,000 and terms from 24 to 240 months, depending on purpose and approved amount. Most ordinary personal-loan purposes use a shorter portion of that range; extremely long terms are linked to specific assets or projects and should not be assumed available for every request.

The current consumer-loan page uses a 7.24% APR payment example and states a 25.39% maximum APR. Lowest rates require excellent credit and vary by purpose, amount, term, profile, and payment method. AutoPay must be selected before funding to obtain the quoted discounted rate; invoice billing is 0.50 percentage points higher.

LightStream says it charges no origination, application, or prepayment fee. Florida documentary stamp tax can be added to qualifying Florida loans, and a receiving bank may charge a wire fee. Those exceptions do not erase the central advantage: most approved principal reaches the borrower, which simplifies net-proceeds planning.

Funding can occur as soon as the application day when approval, verification, agreement, banking, and cutoff requirements are met. The borrower can choose a funding date. “Same day” is not a promise for every application, and urgency should not prevent collecting other soft-pull offers where possible. Confirm when interest begins and when the first payment is due.

LightStream's published Rate Beat program may improve a qualifying competing unsecured fixed-rate offer, subject to detailed timing, matching, and eligibility rules. Treat it as a possible adjustment after gathering a real competing offer—not as evidence that the initial LightStream quote is automatically lowest.

The tradeoff is underwriting. Lowest rates demand excellent credit, and the platform may not be a realistic match for a thin, damaged, or highly leveraged profile. LightStream also generally uses an individual application rather than the joint route highlighted by Happen. It wins for a qualified borrower who wants clean proceeds and can document the exact purpose.

2. SoFi — best flexible fee and member-support package

SoFi ranks second with $5,000 to $100,000 loans and two- to seven-year fixed terms. As of July 6, 2026, published APRs are 6.99% to 35.49% after stated 0.25-point AutoPay and 0.25-point member discounts. The lender determines the actual rate from term, creditworthiness, income, fee selection, and other underwriting factors.

The distinguishing choice is a 0% to 7% optional origination fee. SoFi can present an offer with no fee and another where a deducted fee changes the rate. The correct comparison uses APR, net proceeds, payment, and total payments. If a $20,000 issued loan has a 5% deducted fee, only $19,000 arrives; borrowing more to reach the intended cash increases the obligation.

SoFi states no prepayment or late fee on its personal loans. Missing a payment still matters because interest, delinquency, reporting, collections, and agreement remedies can apply. Its Unemployment Protection program can temporarily modify required payments for an eligible involuntary job loss while providing career support, subject to approval, limits, and continued interest. It is not loan forgiveness or automatic insurance.

Direct Pay can send eligible consolidation funds to creditors, while ordinary personal-loan proceeds can cover permitted uses. SoFi prohibits uses listed in the agreement and may originate through SoFi Bank or named partners depending on the product and jurisdiction. Identify the creditor and servicer in the final documents.

SoFi ranks below LightStream because its highest published APR is greater and an origination fee can complicate proceeds. It may rank first for someone who receives the best actual APR, values Direct Pay or unemployment support, or needs the fee-rate option that produces the lowest total cost.

3. Happen Bank — best low minimum and joint application

Happen Bank, formerly LendingClub, ranks third. Current disclosures show $1,000 to $75,000, terms from 24 to 84 months, and 5.96% to 35.99% fixed APR under the offer stated as current from June 1, 2026. The actual offer reflects credit, debt-to-income ratio, requested amount, term, state, and other information.

Most loans charge a 0% to 8% origination fee, deducted from proceeds and included in APR. There is no application, brokerage, or prepayment fee. Late fees may apply after the published 15-day grace period, and interest begins when the loan is issued even if bank availability takes additional time.

Happen accepts joint applications in qualifying cases. A co-borrower can combine income or credit strengths, but both people owe the full debt. Before adding someone, agree on the purpose, payment source, access to proceeds, reporting, and what happens after job loss, separation, disability, or death. A joint loan should not be used to disguise an unaffordable individual payment.

The lower $1,000 minimum is valuable for a repair, medical balance, or focused refinance that does not justify $5,000. Direct Pay can serve consolidation, and the broader 24-to-84-month menu gives more payment choices than Upstart. Longer terms still raise possible interest.

Happen ranks third because an 8% fee can substantially reduce cash and its upper APR is high. It can beat the leaders for a smaller requested amount, a joint offer, or a strong individual quote. The former LendingClub name should not be used to assume legacy rates or terms; only the current Happen agreement controls.

4. Upstart — best alternative-underwriting comparison quote

Upstart ranks fourth but belongs in the comparison because its lender network evaluates credit, income, and other application information rather than advertising a single score threshold. The platform states that borrowers do not need a minimum educational attainment. No one is guaranteed approval, and model breadth does not guarantee a lower or fairer individual price.

Current unsecured personal-loan offers advertise $1,000 to $75,000, with state minimums of $3,100 in Georgia, $1,500 in Hawaii, and $7,000 in Massachusetts and possible state-specific maximums. Terms are generally three or five years. Published fixed APRs are 6.2% to 35.99%, based on five-year rates offered in March 2026.

The representative offer is essential context: $10,000 issued for 60 months at 17.50% interest with a 7.25% origination fee produces 21.23% APR, $9,275 net proceeds, and 60 payments of $252. A borrower needing $10,000 cash cannot compare that with a $10,000 no-fee loan as if proceeds were equal.

Upstart discloses a soft inquiry for rate checking and a hard inquiry after the borrower accepts and proceeds. It reports that 69% of March 2026 customers had fund transfer initiated within 24 hours after approval and signing; bank processing determines availability. There is no advertised prepayment penalty.

Upstart is most useful as a fourth quote when a conventional lender declines or offers a high rate. It ranks last because potentially large deducted fees, only two common terms, partner variation, and a 35.99% upper APR reduce flexibility. A fast high-cost approval is not better than waiting, reducing the request, or using an alternative.

Request the right amount

Build a line-item use of proceeds. For a contractor, get a written estimate and contingency. For medical care, ask about insurance adjustment, prompt-pay discount, financial assistance, and interest-free plan first. For a purchase, compare waiting and saving. For debt consolidation, use payoff statements.

If the lender deducts a fee, calculate the principal required to receive the target cash. Net proceeds equal issued principal minus the deducted fee. Borrowing $10,000 with an 8% fee produces $9,200, while payments and interest use the $10,000 obligation.

Compare offers on the same basis

Record lender, creditor, servicer, issue amount, fee dollars, cash received, interest rate, APR, payment, first due date, number of payments, total of payments, late fee, AutoPay effect, prepayment rule, collateral language, and expiration. Use offers obtained close together.

Do not compare a 24-month payment with an 84-month payment. If affordability requires the longest term, calculate the total premium paid for that flexibility and whether extra principal payments are allowed and correctly applied.

Protect the soft-pull shopping process

Confirm that initial rate checking uses a soft inquiry and identify the moment a hard inquiry occurs. A soft check is not approval. Final underwriting may require income, employment, identity, bank, or tax documents and may change or withdraw the offer.

Use the official lender domain, not an inbound text or a paid lead form that distributes personal data. Legitimate lenders do not demand gift cards, crypto, wire transfers, or an upfront payment to release loan proceeds.

Read payment and hardship terms before funding

Test the payment portal, AutoPay cancellation, due-date change, extra-principal instruction, payoff quote, and support hours. Ask whether an extra payment advances the due date or reduces principal immediately. Save the signed note and Truth in Lending disclosure outside the portal.

Hardship assistance is discretionary and program-specific. Contact the servicer before missing a payment. A deferral can extend the term or allow interest to accrue. Get every modification in writing and verify later statements.

Consider cheaper alternatives

A credit-union loan, secured savings loan, employer emergency program, medical plan, creditor hardship arrangement, balance-transfer card, or saving delay may cost less. Securing a loan with a car, savings, or home changes the risk: default can threaten the pledged asset.

Do not use an unsecured personal loan for federal student-loan refinancing without understanding lost federal protections. Avoid using loan proceeds for investment or crypto; providers restrict uses, and borrowing to speculate can create loss plus fixed debt.

Frequently asked questions

Which provider has the lowest personal-loan rate?

Published minimums do not answer that. LightStream targets strong credit and has a lower stated maximum; SoFi, Happen, and Upstart may price another profile differently. Compare actual APRs, equal terms, net proceeds, and total payments.

Is a loan with an origination fee always worse?

No. A fee offer can carry a lower interest rate and APR. It is worse when the all-in cost is higher or deducted proceeds fail to meet the need. Compare APR and total payments while normalizing cash received.

Can I pay a personal loan off early?

All four providers state no prepayment penalty in the reviewed material. Request a current payoff quote, confirm how accrued interest is calculated, and verify closure and credit reporting after payment.

How fast can I receive funds?

Some approved LightStream loans can fund the same day, SoFi advertises possible same-day funding, and Upstart reports many transfers initiated within 24 hours. Verification, signing, cutoffs, bank processing, state rules, and weekends change timing. Never choose a worse loan solely for speed.

Does prequalification guarantee approval?

No. It is an estimate based on preliminary information. Final review can verify identity, income, employment, debt, bank data, credit, and permitted use. Terms can change or the application can be declined before funding.
