What Lightspeed is
Lightspeed is a direct-access broker for active U.S. stock and options traders. Its defining features are route selection, hotkeys, rapid order management, market scanners, specialist desktop platforms, and an active-trader trade desk.
It is not a commission-free passive-investing service. The decision depends on whether routing control and workflow improve net results enough to justify commissions, software, data, account, and activity requirements.
Current account minimums
The current legal disclosure lists a $2,500 minimum for new Lightspeed Trader Pro and Web & Mobile accounts. It lists $25,000 for Sterling Trader Pro and Eze EMS, $30,000 for Lightspeed Connect, $50,000 for DAS, and $175,000 for portfolio margin.
Some platform pages still show $5,000. Confirm the amount in the binding application and ask whether it is an opening, ongoing-equity, margin, or product-specific requirement.
Commissions and routes
Lightspeed advertises stock rates from $0.001 per share with a $0.25 minimum or $2 per trade, plus options from $0.20 per contract. Those are top volume tiers. Rates are not applied or adjusted automatically; eligible customers must request them.
Routes, regulatory assessments, exchange charges, order minimums, and platform-specific rules remain separate. Per-share pricing is unavailable in Web & Mobile. A rebate does not prove a better execution if the fill price or timing is worse.
Model typical, quiet, and high-volume months. Retain order, route, fill, fee, and rebate data so the strategy is evaluated net of cost.
Software, data, and activity fees
Lightspeed Trader Pro lists an up-to-$130 monthly software charge reduced by eligible commissions. The FAQ lists $25 for stock data and $10 more for options, while the detailed schedule offers additional feeds and much higher professional rates.
Web & Mobile has no monthly software or nonprofessional market-data charge. It also has a smaller direct-access feature set.
Accounts below $15,000 face a $25 monthly minimum commission reduced by actual prior-month commissions. A low-activity buy-and-hold account can therefore pay despite making no trade.
Trading platforms
Lightspeed Trader Pro offers hotkeys, hot buttons, customizable routes, scanners, charts, baskets, conditional orders, window linking, and API-assisted entry. These tools can reduce friction and also accelerate an incorrect order.
Web & Mobile provides charts, watchlists, scanners, research, and order management with fewer fixed costs. Sterling, Eze EMS, DAS, Connect, and specialist options platforms address more professional workflows with separate minimums and fees.
Use the simplest platform that supports the process. Back up layouts, restrict buying power, test hotkeys, and keep an alternate order-entry path.
Execution measurement
Lightspeed earns 4.9/5 for execution workflow because it documents direct routes, real-time data, rapid order controls, and specialized support. DollarScout did not independently measure latency or fills.
Track submission time, acknowledgement, route, displayed spread, execution price, fees, rebates, and post-fill movement. A fast fill can still be expensive, and a passive order can wait intentionally.
Margin and short sales
Margin interest varies with debit balance and can change. Short selling adds locate availability, borrow charges, recalls, buy-ins, dividends, and theoretically unlimited loss. House margin and risk liquidation apply even when a published regulatory threshold changes.
Maintain excess equity, know the broker’s liquidation process, and size positions so an ordinary adverse move does not force intervention.
Support and operational controls
Lightspeed publishes sales, account, technology, and trading contacts plus a detailed FAQ. Save the trade-desk number outside the software. During an incident, record the account, order ID, route, timestamps, platform version, screenshots, and response.
DollarScout’s service score evaluates documented access and specialization. It is not a measured guarantee of response time because we did not place a support case.
A practical monthly audit
Reconcile the account by order and by month. Match each trade to its per-share, per-ticket, or per-contract tier; then add order minimums, routes, regulatory charges, software, data, borrow, margin, and any minimum-commission adjustment. Verify that a requested Active Trader tier was actually applied, because Lightspeed says rate changes are not automatic or retroactive.
Execution analysis should pair the route and fill with the market visible at submission. Record effective spread, price improvement, fill rate, cancellations, and post-fill movement rather than judging performance from interface speed. A rebate is economically useful only when the complete execution remains competitive.
Finally, review hotkey changes, platform updates, buying-power limits, backup access, and the trade-desk procedure. These controls turn a fast desktop into a repeatable operating system instead of an uncontrolled source of orders.
Where Lightspeed appears on DollarScout
The full review scores Trading Costs 3.6/5, Platform 4.5/5, Execution 4.9/5, Tools 4.5/5, and Customer Service 4.3/5 for an overall 4.4/5. Related comparisons should model all recurring and transaction costs instead of repeating the lowest volume tier.
Decision checklist
Before funding:
- Confirm the binding minimum for the selected platform.
- Obtain the default and qualifying commission tiers.
- Add order minimums, routes, regulatory fees, software, and data.
- Confirm professional or nonprofessional data status.
- Test hotkeys with conservative sizes and controls.
- Define margin, short-borrow, and liquidation buffers.
- Compare net execution with IBKR and TradeStation.
Editorial conclusion
Lightspeed is a strong direct-access system for experienced, genuinely active traders. It is attractive only after the customer proves that execution control outweighs the layered costs and operational risk.
