What TurboTax is
TurboTax is Intuit's online tax-preparation platform for individual returns. Customers can prepare the return themselves, add on-demand expert advice and a final review through Expert Assist, or assign preparation, signing, and filing to an Expert Full Service professional.
DollarScout covers the 2025 individual return filed during the 2026 season. Business entity, desktop, and prior-year products can have different pricing and terms.
Current price structure
TurboTax currently displays Do It Yourself from $0 to $139, Expert Assist from $79 to $209, and Expert Full Service with a promotional starting price of $100 for a base W-2 and Form 1040. Paid state filing is additional.
The final product depends on forms, return complexity, service level, filing date, and offer. Full Service uses personalized forms-based pricing that the expert confirms before preparing the return. Optional refund processing, Audit Defense, and other services can add cost.
Free Edition is limited to qualifying simple Form 1040 returns. The current disclosure allows only specified credits and schedules; itemization, investment sales, rentals, self-employment, and other forms can require a paid product.
DIY, Assist, and Full Service
DIY provides the guided interview, document import, Intuit Assist, CompleteCheck, self-help resources, and the customer-prepared return. It fits a person comfortable supplying and reviewing every answer.
Expert Assist leaves preparation with the customer but adds unlimited expert questions and a final expert review. Full Service assigns an expert who collects documents, prepares the return, signs as preparer, and files after customer approval.
Choose by responsibility rather than the marketing label. Advice does not equal preparation, and professional preparation does not eliminate the taxpayer's duty to disclose complete information and review the return.
Imports and review controls
TurboTax can import or photograph many W-2, 1099, and financial documents. Imports reduce typing but should be compared with the original. Check names, identification numbers, withholding, state fields, cost basis, wash-sale adjustments, and corrected statements.
CompleteCheck scans for missing information and errors. After the check, read the actual Form 1040 and schedules. Reconcile adjusted gross income, taxable income, credits, payments, refund or balance, bank information, and carryovers.
Guarantees and audit scope
TurboTax publishes a seven-year Tax Return Lifetime Guarantee combining accurate calculations, maximum refund, and audit support for eligible individual returns. The calculation guarantee covers qualifying penalties and interest caused by TurboTax arithmetic errors under the terms; the taxpayer remains responsible for additional tax and input mistakes.
The Maximum Refund Guarantee generally refunds the applicable TurboTax software price when another eligible preparation method using the required information produces a better result. It is not generally a payment of the full refund difference.
Included audit support is informational. It does not represent the taxpayer before the IRS or a state agency. Audit Defense is a separately priced representation product.
Security routine
Use a unique Intuit password, multifactor authentication, a secured email account, and an IRS Identity Protection PIN where appropriate. Open notices and upload documents only through authenticated accounts.
Confirm refund and tax-payment routing on the final return. Download the complete federal and state returns, acceptance records, and source documents to encrypted storage instead of relying indefinitely on online access.
A practical filing routine
Create a working folder for original documents, corrected forms, questions, and the exported return. Enter income before deductions so the refund meter does not shape decisions. After every import, mark the original statement as reconciled and record any manual adjustment.
Before checkout, open the fee summary and capture the federal tier, every state, assistance level, refund-payment choice, and Audit Defense decision. If the cost changed, identify the form or service that caused the change before paying.
After transmission, wait for both federal and state acceptance rather than treating submission as filing. Confirm any scheduled payment separately. Add reminders for a pending document, estimated payments, an extension balance, or an amendment and retain the acceptance with the signed return.
Where TurboTax appears on DollarScout
DollarScout's full TurboTax review scores Price, Ease of Use, Accuracy Tools, Support, and Refund Guidance. Comparisons place the product beside H&R Block, TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA, and Cash App Taxes using the complete federal, state, and support basket rather than one starting price.
The 4.4/5 rating reflects excellent guidance and expert escalation at a premium cost. It does not predict eligibility for Free Edition, a final checkout total, acceptance by a tax authority, or the result of a guarantee claim.
Decision checklist
Before starting:
- Inventory every federal form, state, and local return.
- Test Free Edition eligibility against the current form disclosure.
- Decide whether you need software, advice, or professional preparation.
- Add state filing, refund processing, and optional services to the quote.
- Reconcile every imported tax document.
- Read the completed federal and state returns.
- Save the accepted return and source records securely.
Editorial conclusion
TurboTax is the strongest choice here for a filer who values a polished interview, broad imports, and a credible path from DIY questions to full preparation. The same filer should be disciplined about price: narrow free eligibility, paid state returns, form-driven upgrades, and optional services can turn a reasonable federal headline into an expensive basket.
Use the software because its guidance or expert workflow solves a real need. A confident filer whose complete return is supported by a broad free product can often obtain the same lawful tax result for far less.
