What E*TRADE is
E*TRADE from Morgan Stanley is a full-service self-directed and managed brokerage. It combines taxable and retirement accounts with stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, options, bonds, Treasuries, CDs, futures, fractional shares, crypto, managed portfolios, and bank products.
Customers can use the main ETRADE web and mobile experience or Power ETRADE for a more advanced trading workspace.
Account minimums
A standard self-directed brokerage and many eligible IRAs have a $0 opening minimum. Core Portfolios requires $500. Direct fractional purchases in eligible Reg-NMS securities start at $5.
Account minimum does not determine the cash needed for a bond, option strategy, futures margin, fund, managed program, or promotion. Check the exact product.
Pricing
Eligible online U.S.-listed stock, ETF, mutual-fund, and options trades have a $0 commission. Options cost $0.65 per contract or $0.50 after at least 30 qualifying quarterly trades.
OTC trades cost $6.95 or $4.95 at the active tier. Futures are generally $1.50 per contract per side plus fees. Most online secondary bond agency trades cost $1 per bond with minimum and maximum charges. Crypto costs 0.50% of notional value. Broker assistance, margin, transfers, and service events are separate.
Fund expenses, bond markups or spreads, and regulatory fees can apply even when the ticket commission is $0.
Investment selection
E*TRADE’s selection is its principal strength. Mutual funds and individual fixed income complement stocks, ETFs, options, futures, fractional shares, and crypto. Taxable, joint, custodial, education, retirement, small-business, advisory, futures, and bank accounts support household consolidation.
Direct fractional purchases are rolling out across eligible listed securities with a $5 minimum. Eligibility can change, and fractions have transfer and corporate-action limitations.
Research and Power E*TRADE
The main platform includes security research, fund and bond tools, screeners, portfolio views, news, education, and normal order entry. Power E*TRADE adds interactive charts, 100-plus technical studies, preset scans, options analysis, paper trading, and customizable active-trading layouts.
Simulation helps customers learn the controls, but it does not reproduce live liquidity, assignment, slippage, margin calls, taxes, or emotion. Model outputs describe scenarios rather than predict returns.
Core Portfolios
Core Portfolios is automated ETF management with a $500 minimum and a 0.30% annual advisory fee. Underlying ETF expenses remain. Eligible customers can select certain portfolio customizations and may receive tax-loss harvesting.
The service is not a dedicated human adviser or comprehensive financial plan. Compare its recurring fee with self-directed ETFs and competing robo-advisers.
Bonds, cash, and overnight access
E*TRADE supports Treasuries, corporate and municipal bonds, and CDs. Compare yield to worst, calls, credit, duration, quantity, spread, and early-sale liquidity. A $0 Treasury commission does not remove market risk.
Selected ETFs can trade 24x5. Overnight liquidity and spreads can differ substantially from regular hours, so eligible limit orders and patience are important.
Provider and protection boundaries
Brokerage, futures, crypto, bank, and advisory products use different legal entities and agreements. SIPC applies to eligible brokerage assets after member-firm failure, not market loss. FDIC applies to eligible bank deposits under its rules, not securities. Crypto is not FDIC or SIPC insured.
Read the provider on the confirmation instead of assuming every Morgan Stanley-branded product has identical protection.
Where E*TRADE appears on DollarScout
DollarScout’s ETRADE review scores fees, ease, investment selection, research, and customer service. Comparisons use the full fee schedule and separate self-directed, Power ETRADE, Core Portfolios, futures, crypto, and bank products.
The 4.5/5 brand rating reflects documented breadth and tools, not a guarantee about service, execution, or portfolio performance.
Decision checklist
A practical operating routine
Assign each ETRADE interface a job. Use the main web or mobile experience for account administration, beneficiaries, recurring deposits, fund and bond research, and ordinary long-term orders. Use Power ETRADE only when charting, options analysis, paper trading, or advanced order management genuinely adds information. This keeps the platform’s breadth from becoming avoidable complexity.
Maintain an account map listing each registration, beneficiary, cash treatment, intended holdings, and legal provider. For bonds, record yield to worst, call dates, maturity, spread, and the price source. For funds, record share class, expense ratio, load or transaction condition, and tax location. For options or futures, define maximum loss and assignment or liquidation procedures before opening the position.
Review the fee page quarterly and before unfamiliar activity. Download confirmations, statements, cost basis, tax documents, and managed-account reports. Consolidation is valuable when it improves oversight; it is harmful when one login obscures which risks and charges belong to each product.
Before using E*TRADE:
- List every account registration and investment type needed.
- Price options, OTC, bonds, futures, crypto, data, margin, and service events.
- Choose between the main interface and Power E*TRADE by task.
- Compare Core Portfolios with a self-directed allocation.
- Verify the provider and protection for cash, securities, futures, and crypto.
- Use limit orders in thin or overnight sessions.
- Save statements, confirmations, cost basis, and beneficiary records.
Editorial conclusion
E*TRADE is one of the most complete choices for a household that wants mutual funds, direct bonds, retirement accounts, managed investing, and advanced trading tools together. It earns its complexity only when the customer uses that breadth deliberately and reads the product-specific prices.
