How to evaluate SoFi Bank

A source-backed overview of the product, its workflow, tradeoffs, and the checks to make before paying or signing up.

What SoFi Bank is known for

SoFi Bank is the deposit institution inside a broader digital financial brand. Checking and Savings are opened together and sit beside lending, credit, investing, insurance referrals, rewards, credit monitoring, and paid SoFi Plus membership. The appeal is a single mobile ecosystem with competitive banking economics for customers who can satisfy the savings APY activity rule.

The legal entity matters. SoFi Checking and Savings is offered by SoFi Bank, N.A., an FDIC member. SoFi Invest accounts and securities use different entities and are not FDIC-insured bank deposits. A shared app does not make every balance the same type of asset.

The account bundle

SoFi does not currently offer standalone checking or standalone savings. Opening checking also opens savings, and one app manages both. Checking supplies a debit card, payments, checks, and 55,000+ fee-free Allpoint ATMs. Savings holds interest-bearing cash and Vaults, which label money for individual goals without creating separate insured accounts.

The model is strongest when payroll arrives electronically. Eligible direct deposit can unlock the qualified savings APY, early paycheck access, and—with a higher incoming amount—no-fee overdraft coverage. The account is less differentiated when the customer misses qualification and earns the fallback savings rate.

Current APY structure

SoFi’s current rate sheet lists 0.50% APY on checking. Savings and Vaults earn 3.10% APY after eligible direct deposit or at least $5,000 in qualifying deposits during each rolling 31-calendar-day period. Without either condition, savings earns 0.80%. Rates are variable and stated as current May 28, 2026.

Qualifying deposits can include eligible external ACH, wires, peer-to-peer transfers, checks, instant debit funding, and cash, subject to SoFi’s verification. Internal transfers between the customer’s SoFi accounts, interest, bonuses, refunds, credits, and reversals do not count. The APY Details screen shows the customer’s current qualification window.

Promotions and SoFi Plus

Three different numbers can appear in SoFi marketing. The 3.10% qualified base is the continuing free-account reference. An eligible first-time account can receive a temporary 0.70-percentage-point boost, for up to 3.80% for six months, after opening and starting eligible direct deposit within the published deadlines. That offer should not be projected past six months.

Paid SoFi Plus terms currently describe 4.50% on up to $20,000 in one eligible Savings account and 3.10% above the cap. That is a subscription benefit, not the standard free-account rate. Evaluate the subscription fee and other benefits before crediting the higher APY with net value.

Fees, overdraft, and bonuses

Checking and Savings advertise no monthly, minimum-balance, or standard overdraft account fees. No-Fee Overdraft Coverage can cover eligible transactions up to $50 after at least $1,000 in eligible direct deposits during a rolling 31-day period. This threshold differs from the qualified savings rule, which does not state a minimum direct-deposit amount.

SoFi also markets a temporary direct-deposit bonus. Current terms offer $50 after at least $1,000 and $400 after at least $5,000 in eligible direct deposits during a 25-day measurement period. Bonuses can be taxable, change, or end. They should not outweigh the continuing APY and access model.

ATM and cash access

The debit card uses more than 55,000 fee-free Allpoint ATMs. Cash deposits do not use that ATM network. SoFi directs customers to participating Green Dot retailers, where the partner can charge up to $4.95 per deposit. Funds are typically available within 15 minutes but can take up to two hours.

This distinction is decisive for cash users. A large withdrawal network does not imply free deposit access. Someone depositing cash weekly can accumulate more than $250 per year in maximum retail fees, enough to change the comparison with a branch or free-cash-deposit bank.

Extended FDIC coverage

Standard eligible SoFi Bank deposits receive FDIC coverage within ownership-category limits. SoFi also offers an optional network program that can place eligible savings funds at participating banks and advertises additional coverage up to $3 million. Actual capacity depends on opt-in status, ownership, program banks, and money the customer already holds at a receiving institution.

Review the participating-bank list and exclude conflicts. The extended headline does not apply to SoFi Invest securities or every dollar held in the app.

Decision checklist

SoFi is a strong candidate when:

  • Eligible direct deposit will recur every month.
  • The APY Details screen will be monitored after payroll changes.
  • Allpoint ATMs cover withdrawals and cash deposits are rare.
  • An integrated financial app reduces rather than increases distraction.
  • Vaults and interest-bearing checking solve actual tasks.

It is easier to skip when the fallback 0.80% rate is likely, Green Dot cash fees will recur, or a branch is important.

Editorial conclusion

SoFi Bank is a high-value mobile account when the customer fits its activity model. No monthly fees, 0.50% checking APY, a 3.10% qualified savings rate, Vaults, and a large ATM network create a strong base. Qualification windows, layered promotions, paid membership rates, and retail cash fees make the headline more complex than it first appears.

Judge SoFi using the rate that will continue after promotions and the funding method that will happen in real life. The product is excellent for recurring electronic income and less compelling when the customer lives in the fallback tier.
