Progressive

4.5/54.5DollarScout rating

Progressive earns 4.5/5 for extensive auto and specialty-vehicle coverage, direct and independent-agent distribution, transparent quote tools, strong discounts, and detailed digital claims tracking. Snapshot can reward safer driving but can also increase the renewal rate for higher-risk behavior in applicable states; Name Your Price adjusts coverage to a budget and is not a price-matching promise. Home, condo, and renters policies may be written by Progressive affiliates or unaffiliated carriers, so the underwriting company still needs separate review. Progressive is especially strong for drivers who want to compare, customize, and service a policy online.

How to evaluate Progressive

A source-backed overview of the product, its workflow, tradeoffs, and the checks to make before paying or signing up.

What Progressive is

Progressive sells personal and commercial auto insurance through direct web and phone channels and independent agents. It also has deep motorcycle, boat, RV, classic-car, and other specialty-vehicle coverage. Property and ancillary products can be issued by Progressive affiliates or unaffiliated partner insurers.

Its best-known tools—Name Your Price, AutoQuote Explorer, and Snapshot—are valuable when their limits are understood.

Pricing and channels

Every premium is individualized by driver, vehicle, location, use, history, coverage, deductibles, discounts, state factors, and channel. Progressive states that prices vary based on whether coverage is bought direct or through an agent.

Compare the same limits, deductibles, optional coverage, term, effective date, and payment plan. Marketing averages for customers who switched and saved do not predict a new shopper’s quote.

Name Your Price

Name Your Price is not price matching. Progressive first determines its quote range, then shows available coverage combinations near a target budget. Its lowest option may remove protection the customer wants.

Set a coverage floor first: liability, uninsured-motorist treatment, comprehensive and collision, rental, roadside, and any household-specific endorsements. Use the tool to optimize above that floor rather than letting the slider define the risk plan.

Snapshot

Snapshot uses a mobile app or eligible plug-in device to evaluate factors such as mileage, time of day, hard braking, rapid acceleration, and mobile phone use. Location can also be collected and used for underwriting.

Progressive says higher-risk driving can increase a renewal depending on the state and enrollment. The initial participation discount is generally replaced by the personalized result. Opting out can remove the discount and can have additional consequences in some states.

Read the state details, monitoring threshold, permissions, trip-correction process, opt-out rules, and renewal timing before enrolling. Snapshot is not a universal discount-only product.

Coverage breadth

Progressive’s strongest differentiator is vehicle depth. Personal auto options can include loan or lease payoff, rideshare, roadside, rental, deductible programs, accident forgiveness, and vehicle protection where eligible. Motorcycle, boat, RV, commercial auto, and specialty products can consolidate complicated transportation needs.

Optional features only apply when listed in the policy. Verify limits, exclusions, and deductibles; a product page is not a coverage binder.

Property and partner insurers

Homeowners, condo, renters, manufactured home, and other policies can be written by affiliated or unaffiliated insurers. Record the carrier, NAIC number, forms, claims phone, financial-strength source, and inspection or catastrophe terms.

A bundle discount does not merge the legal contracts. Research the property insurer separately and confirm replacement coverage before cancelling an old policy.

Claims

Progressive accepts claims online, in the app, and by phone. The digital claim view can show status, representative and shop contacts, coverage at the loss date, estimates, repair status, payments, total-loss progress, and deductible recovery.

Network repair scheduling is optional where eligible; customers may choose another shop. Preserve incident evidence and ask for coverage, valuation, and supplement decisions in writing.

Distribution and service

Customers can use web, app, phone, chat, or an independent agent. Know whether the policy is Progressive Direct or Progressive Agency and who services each partner product. The choice is useful, but prices and workflows can differ.

Build a comparison worksheet

Progressive’s tools are most useful when the customer records what changes. Start with a coverage baseline from the current declarations, then create one row for liability, uninsured motorist, medical or no-fault coverage, comprehensive, collision, rental, roadside, loan or lease payoff, rideshare, and specialty equipment. Record the limit, deductible, term premium, and important exclusion for every carrier.

Run Name Your Price only after the baseline is fixed. If a displayed package is cheaper, note exactly which limit, deductible, or option changed. Then compare the total term rather than a first installment or monthly estimate. Include installment fees and the cost of a separate property policy when testing a bundle.

At renewal, repeat the worksheet before assuming Snapshot caused the entire change. Separate the Snapshot result from base-rate, vehicle, driver, territory, coverage, discount, and mileage changes. Ask for an explanation when the declarations do not make the difference clear.

Where Progressive appears on DollarScout

DollarScout’s full review scores price, coverage, claims, discounts, and service. Comparisons keep Name Your Price coverage changes visible and never describe Snapshot as guaranteed savings. Rankings distinguish Progressive-underwritten coverage from partner products.

Complaint research uses the legal company on the declarations. Filter NAIC Consumer Insurance Search by state, line, and year, and do not combine personal auto, commercial auto, property affiliates, and partners.

Decision checklist

Before buying Progressive coverage:

  1. Set the required coverage before using Name Your Price.
  2. Match every quote input and compare direct versus agency where useful.
  3. Read Snapshot state and opt-out rules.
  4. Identify the underwriting company for every non-auto policy.
  5. Verify optional coverages on the declarations.
  6. Save the correct claims and service path.
  7. Review coverage and discounts at renewal.

Editorial conclusion

Progressive is a strong fit for informed auto shoppers and households with multiple vehicle types. Its tools improve control but require judgment: a lower slider price can mean lower protection, Snapshot can move a renewal upward, and property coverage can belong to another carrier. Used carefully, the platform provides unusually broad choice and strong digital servicing.
