4.5/5

H&R Block earns 4.5/5 for combining capable DIY software with live tax-pro support and a nationwide office network. Current online pricing is $0 for qualifying Free returns, then $65 Deluxe, $105 Premium, or $130 Self-Employed, plus $49 per state on paid tiers. AI Tax Assist and Live Tax Pro Support are included with paid DIY editions. The hybrid model is valuable, but online, virtual, and office preparation are different engagements with different prices and account access. H&R Block is best for someone who wants to begin online without giving up a credible path to human help.

H&R Block at a glance

H&R Block offers three distinct ways to file: self-prepare through H&R Block Online, work remotely with a tax professional, or use an office. The brand connection is useful, but customers should not assume that work transfers seamlessly among those channels.

For the 2025 return filed in 2026, the online lineup is Free, Deluxe at $65, Premium at $105, and Self-Employed at $130. Paid tiers add $49 for each state. H&R Block currently includes AI Tax Assist and Live Tax Pro Support with paid DIY editions.

H&R Block's advantage is choice. Decide whether you want advice inside DIY software or a professional who actually prepares and signs the return.

Online pricing and free eligibility

Price scores 4.0/5. Free Online currently costs $0 for qualifying federal and state filing. It is designed for straightforward wage income and can support selected credits and common situations, but form eligibility—not the apparent simplicity of the household—determines whether it remains free.

Deluxe costs $65 federal plus $49 per state and adds support for homeowners, itemized deductions, dependent care, health savings accounts, and related situations. Premium costs $105 plus state and covers investments, virtual currency, rental income, and other advanced forms. Self-Employed costs $130 plus state for Schedule C, freelancers, gig workers, and business deductions.

Inventory all forms and states before beginning. A filer with two paid state returns adds $98 before any other service. Office preparation starts from a separately advertised amount and depends on forms, complexity, location, and service. Do not compare an online federal price with a tax professional's all-in quote as though they purchase the same work.

AI Tax Assist

Ease of Use scores 4.7/5. AI Tax Assist provides in-product answers at any hour, using H&R Block tax content and Microsoft Azure AI. It can explain a question without making the filer leave the current step, and paid DIY users receive it without an extra upgrade under current disclosures.

An AI explanation remains an aid, not a signed professional opinion. Ask a narrow question, identify the tax year and jurisdiction, and verify the answer against the actual form instructions or a live tax professional when the result affects filing status, basis, residency, entity classification, foreign reporting, or a large deduction.

Never use an AI answer to fill in missing facts. The quality of the answer depends on the question and information supplied, and the taxpayer remains responsible for the return.

Live Tax Pro Support

Support scores 4.9/5. Paid online tiers currently include unlimited Live Tax Pro Support. H&R Block says tax professionals are available extended weekday hours and seven days a week during the core season, subject to the published schedule and availability.

Live support can answer tax questions during self-preparation, but the customer still prepares and files the DIY return. A local office professional cannot see an online account simply because both services use the H&R Block name. Tax Pro Review or a prepared-for-you service is a separate workflow in which a professional reviews or handles the return under the applicable offer.

Before relying on a support conversation, record the question, assumptions, answer, professional's name, date, and any cited source. Recheck an answer if the underlying document changes or a corrected form arrives.

Office and virtual preparation

H&R Block's office footprint is its clearest distinction from online-only software. A filer can schedule an office appointment, drop off documents, or use available remote professional services. This helps someone with a paper-heavy return, a preference for face-to-face explanation, or uncertainty that cannot be resolved in a DIY chat.

Professional preparation is not a free extension of Online. Ask for an upfront estimate based on expected forms: W-2, 1099s, itemized deductions, Schedule C, Schedule E, K-1, state residency changes, and amendments. Confirm whether the price includes e-filing, each state, review, notice support, and copies.

A professional signs as paid preparer, but the taxpayer must still review names, Social Security numbers, income, withholding, direct-deposit information, elections, and the declaration before authorizing filing.

Interview, imports, and return review

The online interview uses guided questions, document upload, and prior-year import to organize income, deductions, credits, health coverage, investments, and business activity. H&R Block also advertises direct import tools intended to simplify switching from another provider.

Imports reduce typing; they do not make a statement authoritative. Reconcile every W-2 and 1099 total, and inspect cost basis, state withholding, employee stock activity, and corrected forms. If a PDF import omits a field or maps it incorrectly, the taxpayer owns the result.

After the interview, read the complete federal and state returns. Compare adjusted gross income, taxable income, total tax, credits, payments, refund or balance due, and carryforwards with the prior year. Explain material changes instead of accepting them because the program found no blocking error.

Accuracy Review and guarantee

Accuracy Tools scores 4.6/5. H&R Block Online runs an Accuracy Review that identifies missing information and errors before e-file. Its current consumer explanation states that a program math error causing IRS penalties or interest can be reimbursed up to $10,000, subject to the detailed conditions.

The guarantee does not turn incomplete taxpayer data into H&R Block's error. It can exclude missing income, inaccurate information, ignored warnings, unsupported positions, law changes outside the terms, and missed claim deadlines. It also does not include in-person audit representation.

Resolve every error and warning before filing. Keep the source document, final accepted return, e-file acknowledgement, payment confirmation, and correspondence for the retention period appropriate to the return.

Maximum Refund Guarantee

Refund Guidance scores 4.5/5. For Online and desktop software, H&R Block's Maximum Refund Guarantee says that if a software error entitles the customer to a larger refund or smaller liability, H&R Block will refund the software fees paid for that return and allow an amendment without an additional software charge, subject to conditions.

For a return prepared by a tax professional, the written remedy similarly addresses the preparation fee and amendment when an H&R Block error caused the difference. The claim must be made in the applicable calendar year, and exclusions include incomplete or inconsistent customer information, positions chosen by the filer, unclaimed items by choice, conflicting law, and later law changes.

The remedy is not a promise to pay the entire refund difference. A refund is simply excess payment returned by the government; it is not a performance score for a tax preparer.

Notices and audit help

H&R Block describes free audit assistance within its No Surprise framework, while in-person representation and Peace of Mind products follow separate terms and eligibility. Customers should identify which service they bought and what the current agreement covers.

An IRS notice is not automatically an audit. It may concern identity verification, a math adjustment, an unmatched information return, a payment, or a request for documents. Verify the notice through IRS.gov or an official telephone number, note the deadline, and respond only through authenticated channels.

If the issue involves a disputed legal position, a substantial balance, a business, or a criminal concern, independent representation by an enrolled agent, CPA, or tax attorney may be appropriate regardless of software guarantees.

Security and account controls

Tax returns contain enough information for identity theft, refund diversion, and account takeover. Use a unique password, multifactor authentication, a secured email account, and an IRS Identity Protection PIN when appropriate. Avoid preparing a return on public Wi-Fi or a shared computer.

When meeting an office professional, ask how documents are uploaded, stored, returned, and destroyed. Do not send full tax files to an unverified personal email address. Confirm direct-deposit and payment details on the final return rather than relying on an intake sheet.

Retain a local encrypted copy of the signed return and source documents. Access to a commercial account can change long before the legal need for the record ends.

H&R Block alternatives

Choose TurboTax when the most polished interview and broad import network matter more than price. Choose FreeTaxUSA when a confident DIY filer wants $0 federal filing across many advanced forms and a $15.99 state price.

TaxAct offers conventional tiered software with competitive federal pricing and optional expert help. Cash App Taxes offers supported federal and state filing for $0 but does not provide an equivalent professional or office network.

Eligible taxpayers should also enter IRS Free File through the IRS website and compare the supported forms and state offer. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or Tax Counseling for the Elderly can be better than commercial software for eligible households that need personal help.

Who H&R Block is best for

H&R Block fits filers who:

  • Want to self-prepare but expect to ask a live tax professional questions.
  • Prefer the option of remote or in-person professional preparation.
  • Have homeowner, investment, rental, or self-employment forms covered by a clear paid tier.
  • Will compare the complete federal, state, and professional price.
  • Understand that DIY, review, and prepared-for-you services assign responsibility differently.

It is less attractive when a broad-form free federal product supports the return and no live help is needed, or when multiple $49 state charges dominate the budget.

Bottom line

H&R Block earns 4.5/5. Its unusually strong Support score is justified by included AI and live tax-pro help on paid DIY tiers plus genuine virtual and office preparation choices. The online interface, imports, and Accuracy Review make it a capable self-preparation product.

The user still needs to choose the correct channel. Start with a form inventory, price every state, decide whether advice or actual preparation is required, and verify how work can move if DIY stops being appropriate. H&R Block is a strong hybrid, not one interchangeable service behind several buttons.

Who H&R Block is best for

  • DIY filers who want included human tax help
  • People who may prefer virtual or office preparation
  • Moderately complex returns with investments or self-employment

How we scored H&R Block

The 4.5/5 overall rating is the weighted average of Price 25%, Ease of Use 20%, Accuracy Tools 20%, Support 20%, and Refund Guidance 15%. DollarScout reviewed H&R Block’s current 2026 online pricing, product eligibility, AI and live-support disclosures, help center, hybrid preparation choices, Accuracy and Maximum Refund Guarantees, the 2026 reviewer guide, and IRS resources. We did not file a return, visit an office, test an AI answer, screen-share with a tax professional, buy an add-on, or submit a guarantee claim. Office availability did not automatically raise the DIY score because an office tax professional cannot simply enter an unrelated online account.
