Overall rating

/ 5.0
4.2/5

Cash App Taxes earns 4.2/5 because supported federal and state self-preparation costs $0 even for many 1099, investment, crypto, and self-employment situations. It works on phone or computer and publishes meaningful security controls. The tradeoff is service depth: a Cash App account is required, the taxpayer remains solely responsible, and the terms exclude tax advice, planning, audit help, and representation. The Maximum Refund Guarantee is federal-only, same-year, and capped at a $100 gift card. It is excellent value for a supported return that the filer confidently understands, not a substitute for professional preparation.

Cash App Taxes at a glance

Cash App Taxes is a self-preparation and e-file service connected to a Cash App account. It advertises $0 federal and state filing for supported returns, including W-2, 1099, investments, cryptocurrency sales, and self-employment.

There is no paid upgrade ladder. The same $0 product includes step-by-step filing, calculation and maximum-refund guarantees, and access from a phone or computer. That simplicity comes with limited professional support and no audit service.

Is Cash App Taxes really free?

Price scores 5.0/5. The current product page says federal and state filing costs $0, with no charge for deductions, credits, 1099 income, investment sales, cryptocurrency, or self-employment when the return is supported. The December 2025 terms likewise state that there are currently no service fees.

The terms reserve the right to introduce or change fees in the future with the applicable agreement process. Verify the checkout and current terms in the filing year rather than treating $0 as a permanent entitlement.

A free product can still have financial choices around it. Routing a refund to Cash App, using another Cash App product, or choosing a payment method can have separate terms. Tax filing is provided by Cash App Taxes, Inc.; Cash App is a financial-services platform, not a bank.

Supported tax situations

Cash App Taxes advertises support for simple and complex individual returns, including W-2s, 1099s, investments, stock and bitcoin sales, side gigs, contractors, and small-business income. The ordinary product does not charge a higher tier for those categories.

The broad headline should still be checked against the live form and state support for the exact year. The terms describe federal e-file and most states that permit e-file, while noting that paper filing may be needed when electronic filing is unavailable. An unusual form, state combination, prior-year issue, entity return, international disclosure, or local tax can fall outside an ordinary individual workflow.

Build a document inventory before registration. If one essential schedule is missing, choose another provider early rather than after entering Social Security numbers, dependents, income, and business records.

Account requirements

Cash App Taxes requires a Cash App account for single sign-on. The terms require the tax user to be at least 18, have a valid U.S. Social Security number, register only for themselves, and maintain accurate account information.

That connection is convenient for an existing user and an additional dependency for everyone else. Losing access to Cash App, changing a telephone number, or encountering an identity check can affect the tax workflow. Resolve account recovery and update contact information well before the filing deadline.

Do not let another person file by sharing credentials. A spouse or preparer who needs to participate should follow the supported authorization and signature process rather than impersonating the account owner.

Interview and filing experience

Ease of Use scores 4.1/5. The service works through a phone or computer and uses step-by-step prompts rather than raw forms. Mobile access can be useful for photographing documents, checking status, and filing a straightforward return.

A document-heavy investment, rental, or business return deserves a larger screen and deliberate reconciliation. Convenience on a phone does not change the number of transactions, basis adjustments, expenses, or state allocations that must be correct.

Enter all income before judging the refund, resolve every warning, and review the full federal and state returns. Check names, Social Security numbers, filing status, dependents, wages, withholding, adjusted gross income, taxable income, credits, payments, direct deposit, and signatures.

Imports and Cash App information

Cash App can already hold payment, investing, or bitcoin information relevant to taxes, but a tax return must include all sources—not only activity visible within the platform. Collect W-2s, bank interest, external broker statements, contractor income, business records, marketplace insurance, retirement forms, property documents, and state data.

An imported transaction still needs tax context. Cryptocurrency cost basis can depend on lots and transfers from outside wallets. Stock basis can be missing or adjusted. A 1099-K reports gross payments rather than taxable profit and does not replace a Schedule C expense ledger.

Reconcile any imported totals with the original tax documents and records. Never assume that using one ecosystem causes every taxable event to appear automatically.

Calculation tools and taxpayer responsibility

Accuracy Tools scores 4.2/5. Cash App Taxes advertises an Accurate Calculations Guarantee and checks entries through its software. It is also an authorized IRS e-file provider and says it complies with IRS security, privacy, and business standards.

The governing terms are blunt about responsibility: the taxpayer must provide complete and accurate information, review the return, submit it on time, and confirm that the tax authority accepts it. The service does not guarantee that every recommendation is appropriate to the user's circumstances.

No calculation engine can repair an omitted form, wrong basis, incorrect residency answer, or unsupported position. Compare the completed return with source documents and prior-year carryovers. If an issue requires judgment rather than arithmetic, consult a qualified professional.

Maximum Refund Guarantee

Refund Guidance scores 4.0/5. The written Maximum Refund Guarantee applies to an eligible federal return when a timely amended federal return prepared with another online service produces a larger refund or smaller liability using the same tax-return information.

The original return, amended return, and claim must all occur in the same calendar year, and both returns must meet the applicable IRS deadlines. State returns and prior-year returns are excluded. The benefit is a gift card equal to the difference, capped at $100 with a $25 minimum.

The claimant needs the completed form, printed amended return and schedules, and an IRS Record of Account Transcript showing the amendment. Acceptance remains subject to the terms and review. This is narrower than a promise to reimburse unlimited tax differences.

A refund is not evidence of software quality by itself. It reflects payments and credits minus liability. A correct smaller refund can be preferable to an inflated, unsupported claim.

Support channels and limits

Support scores 3.3/5. Cash App publishes 24/7 in-app chat and telephone support daily from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Eastern for Cash App customer issues. Cash App Taxes also provides a tax help center and a support route for filing questions and past returns.

Those operating hours do not create professional tax advice. The Cash App Taxes terms state that the service is not a tax adviser, does not provide tax planning or structuring, and is not obligated to help with an audit.

Support can assist with account access, product navigation, e-file status, and service errors. When the question is whether a deduction is legally allowable, how a multi-state allocation works, or who owns an item of income, a credentialed professional is the appropriate resource.

No audit assistance or representation

Cash App Taxes does not include audit help or representation. The terms say the taxpayer is responsible for defense, costs, fees, and additional tax if a return is audited.

If an IRS or state letter arrives, first verify it through an official account or published government number. Identify the notice type and deadline, preserve the envelope, and gather the filed return, acceptance, source records, and payment evidence.

An enrolled agent, CPA, or tax attorney can provide representation depending on the issue. Seek independent help promptly for a large proposed change, business matter, international disclosure, repeated nonfiling, or potential fraud.

Security and privacy

Cash App Taxes states that it uses at least 128-bit encryption for transmitted tax data, maintains physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards, has dedicated security personnel and outside vulnerability assessments, and supports authenticator-app two-factor authentication.

Account linking makes phone security especially important. Use a unique passcode, enable two-factor authentication, protect the connected email, lock the device, and obtain an IRS Identity Protection PIN where appropriate. Do not share one-time codes or allow remote access from an unsolicited support contact.

Confirm refund routing and tax-payment details on the final return. Download encrypted copies of federal and state returns, worksheets, and acceptance messages instead of relying indefinitely on an app account.

Early refund marketing

Cash App advertises access to a federal refund up to five days early when it is deposited into Cash App, subject to timing and program terms. The IRS controls when it releases a refund, and some returns take longer than 21 days because of credits, identity verification, errors, or review.

Early availability does not increase the refund or make filing more accurate. Choose a destination based on security, access, deposit insurance eligibility under the account terms, and how the money will be used—not a best-case timing claim.

Never pay a stranger to release a refund or respond to a message claiming that a tax authority needs gift cards, cryptocurrency, or a Cash App transfer.

Cash App Taxes alternatives

Choose FreeTaxUSA when broad federal filing at $0, a $15.99 state return, and optional live or professional tax advice are preferable. Choose TaxAct when a conventional tiered interview, stronger guarantee framework, or full-service path matters.

H&R Block adds live tax-pro help on paid DIY tiers and an office network. TurboTax offers the strongest guided interview and expert handoff, usually at the highest price.

Eligible users should also compare IRS Free File, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, and Tax Counseling for the Elderly. A supported free option with personal help can be more suitable than a no-cost app.

Who Cash App Taxes is best for

Cash App Taxes fits filers who:

  • Already use Cash App and can secure the account.
  • Have a supported individual federal and state return.
  • Understand the forms well enough to self-prepare without tax advice.
  • Want to avoid every ordinary filing charge.
  • Will review the return and preserve records independently.

It is weaker for anyone who wants a credentialed expert to advise, prepare, sign, or represent them, or whose form and state combination is not clearly supported.

Bottom line

Cash App Taxes earns 4.2/5. A genuine $0 federal and supported-state product with broad individual form claims, mobile and desktop access, encryption, and e-file authorization is a strong consumer value.

The correct comparison includes professional responsibility. Cash App Taxes supplies software and product support, while its terms leave tax judgment, completeness, filing, and audits with the taxpayer. Verify form coverage first, secure the connected account, reconcile every document, and move to a professional service when the return asks questions the software cannot responsibly answer.

Who Cash App Taxes is best for

  • Confident self-preparers with a supported return
  • Existing Cash App users prioritizing a zero-dollar price
  • 1099 or investment filers who do not need professional advice
